Open Call - Programming from the Community to the 2022 Schedule of Programming

Every year, the Berlin Performing Arts Festival (PAF) presents the works and the artistic positions of the independent arts community to the city in a joint festival. The festival is only possible thanks to the participation of the independent performance venues and event locations, groups, collectives and artists.

The goal ist to make the diversity, quality and vitality of Berlin’s independent performing arts community visible to a broad audience. The Performing Arts Festival aims at creating a space, in which the recent aesthetic, contentual and structural developments can be shown and discussed. Berlin-based artists and guests from outside of the city are invited to enter into exchanges during the festival (and long after its closing and afterwards), to network and celebrate the independent performing arts community together.

The next edition of the festival will take place from May 24 to 29, 2022.

For the 7th edition of the Berlin Performing Arts Festival, all Berlin performance venues and event locations within the independent performing arts community are warmly invited to participate with their productions created by Berlin-based artists, artist collectives and groups, which forms the heart of the festival and should represent a broad spectrum of the performing arts in Berlin. This means that the curation of the festival rests with the performance venues and event locations themselves who present their own institution through the selection of productions they submit and thus create the Programming From the Community. For the 2022 edition of the PAF, only existing productions that were premiered since 2019 can be submitted; these can be digital, analog as well as hybrid. It is not possible to submit premieres.

The artistic schedule of Programming from the Community will be presented during the festival from May 25 to May 28, 2022.

Alongside the established newcomers` platform Introducing…, which will once again be a central part of the festival, the last day of the festival will be dedicated for the first time to selected artists who would like to present short works and who do not need a performance venue or event location in order to do so. The open calls for both of these formats will be announced at the beginning of 2022.

"Day of Open House(s)" & festival center

In addition, the fetival would like to once again dedicate one day to the independent performance venues and event locations during the festival in order to make them especially visible. On May 28, 2022, all participating performance venues and event locations in Berlin are invited to take part in the Day of Open House(s) and open their doors during the day to give the audience a look behind their respective (and often figurative) curtains. This year’s festival center will take place each day at a different participating performance venue or event location.Venues and locations can express their interest in serving as a host for a day directly in the submission form. We hope that the community will be as excited about this idea as we are.

The open call is closed. You can find all informations at the FAQs. The submission deadline was January 16, 2022.
