Open Call - Contributions from the Community to the 2021 Schedule of Programming

Each year, the Berlin Performing Arts Festival presents the works created by and the artistic positions of the independent performing arts community to the city in a shared festival. This festival is only possible thanks to the participation of the independent performance venues / event locations, groups, collectives and artists who make up the community.

The goal is make the diversity, quality and vitality of Berlin’s independent performing arts community visible to a broad audience and offer a place with the Performing Arts Festival in which the aesthetic, content-based and structural developments of the community can be discussed and debated. Berlin-based artists and guests from outside of the city are invited to enter into exchanges during the festival (and long after its closing), network and celebrate the independent performing arts community together.

The next edition of the festival will take place from May 25 to 30, 2021.

For the 6th edition of the Berlin Performing Arts Festival, all Berlin performance venues and event locations within the independent performing arts community are warmly invited to participate in the creation of the schedule of programming with their productions and events created by Berlin-based artists, artist collectives and groups, which serves as the heart of the festival. In order to ensure that we can present the broadest possible spectrum of Berlin’s independent performing arts community, the contributions from the community to the 2021 schedule of programming will not be curated by the festival team; all submissions are welcome. We are especially excited by the prospect of submissions of digital and hybrid contributions, which are increasingly shaping the artistic and cultural landscape throughout the current developments. No matter whether they are live streams, radio plays, films, digital formats like telegram performances or something else, all formats are desired for the genre “digital/hybrid work” which has been newly integrated within the open call.

The artistic schedule of programming from the community will be presented during the festival from May 26 to May 29, 2021. In the event that the festival cannot take place live as planned in the spring of 2021, we are already pleased to also receive supplementary recordings or documentations of your productions that could also be used in a virtual venue in the event of an online edition of the festival.

As many venues for cultural encounters have been forced to remain closed during the turbulent events of the last several months, we want, and not least of all because you have already accompanied us along the way for six editions of the festival, to dedicate a special day to these venues during and ensure that they are especially visible. On May 29, all participating performance venues and event locations in Berlin are invited to take part in a Day of Open House(s) and open their doors during the day and present their spaces as well as their artistic profiles to an audience, no matter whether they do so with a walk, a tour of the stage or over the course of a brief conversation. There are no limits placed on creativity here.

Open call is closed. The submission deadline for the open call for the contribution from the community for the schedule of programming was January 23, 2021. You can find additional information in the FAQs.
